FieldCamp is an AI-powered field service management platform that simplifies dispatching, scheduling, and routing for mobile workforce teams. With its intelligent route optimization feature, FieldCamp dynamically calculates the shortest and most efficient paths for technicians, ensuring they reach their destinations in the least amount of time.

Unlike traditional manual scheduling methods, FieldCamp integrates real-time data and AI algorithms to provide smart routing solutions without requiring third-party integrations. Instead of in-app navigation, FieldCamp generates a shareable route URL that can be accessed via mobile devices, allowing technicians to easily follow the optimized path.

Step-by-Step Guide to Route Optimization in FieldCamp

Step 1: Input Job Details into FieldCamp

Log in to your FieldCamp dashboard and enter all service jobs that need to be scheduled.

Input essential details such as:

  • Customer information (name, address, contact details).

  • Job type and description (e.g., AC repair, electrical wiring, plumbing installation).

  • Service priority level (urgent, standard, or low priority).

  • Preferred service time slots to match customer availability.

  • FieldCamp stores these job details in a centralized database, allowing dispatchers to easily access and manage assignments.

Important: For route optimization to work effectively, we recommend selecting a specific date for the job but setting the time to “Anytime.” This allows our algorithm to automatically schedule the job at the most efficient time based on the overall route.

Use the week-wise view for better planning of upcoming tasks and avoiding last-minute scheduling conflicts.

Step 2: Assign Technicians Based on Location & Availability

  • Use the job feature to assign service requests to available field personnel.

    FieldCamp provides an overview of:

  • Technician availability (who is free or already scheduled).

  • Skill match (ensuring the technician has the right expertise for the job).

Always mark high-priority jobs to ensure they get assigned first, reducing customer wait times.

Step 3: Navigate to Route Optimization Screen

​Click Calendar in main navigation

  1. Select Team Tracking sub-menu

  2. Route optimization interface opens

The Team Tracking screen provides a specialized environment for route planning separate from standard dispatch views.

Step 4: Choose Date and Optimization Mode

Choose Date

  1. Select target date from calendar picker

  2. System loads all jobs for that date

  3. Job counts display by category

Select Optimization Mode

Single Technician Mode

  • Optimizes one person's route

  • Ideal for individual route planning

  • Maintains other schedules unchanged

  • Perfect for new job insertions

Multi-Tech Mode (Entire Team)

  • Optimizes all technicians simultaneously

  • Rebalances entire day's workload

  • Maximizes overall efficiency

  • Best for morning planning


Step 5: Review Jobs for Optimization

You’ll now see all jobs scheduled for the selected date.

Jobs are grouped as:

Job Categories Display

Confirmed Appointments

  • Fixed technician and time

  • Shown with lock icon

  • Optimizer works around these

  • Cannot be moved unless unlocked

Flexible Jobs 🕒

  • Assigned technician, "Anytime" scheduling

  • Ideal candidates for optimization

  • Shown with clock icon

  • Maximum optimization potential

Filtering Options

  • View only flexible jobs (recommended for pure optimization)

  • View only confirmed (to see constraints)

  • Select all (full day optimization with constraints)


Step 3: Run Optimization

Click the “Optimize Routes” button (top-right).

FieldCamp’s AI engine will generate the most efficient travel route for each technician — factoring in job priority, location, and time flexibility.


Step 4: Preview and Apply the Route

After optimization:

  • A visual route is shown on the map

  • Confirm that job sequences, estimated time blocks, and assignments look accurate

Nothing is dispatched yet. This is just a preview.

Once you’re confident:

  • Click Apply to commit the optimized jobs to your Dispatch Calendar

🛑 If you don’t apply the changes, the jobs remain unaltered — helping you avoid accidental updates or miscommunication with customers.


Step 5: Share the Route (Optional)

Once routes are applied, technicians can see it on their FieldCamp mobile app, or a Share URL is generated per technician.

Technicians can open this link on their phone and follow the optimized route in Google Maps or Waze — no additional apps required.

  • For best results, mark jobs as “Anytime” when they’re flexible — this gives the optimizer maximum flexibility.

  • Use Single Tech mode to plan routes for a specific technician.

  • Use Multi Tech mode when managing a full day for the entire team.

  • Review routes every morning to catch missed assignments or scheduling conflicts.
